POSITION: Yard Maintenance

REPORTS TO:       Yard Foreman

SUMMARY:  Performs various maintenance responsibilities in the feed yard by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintains and performs repairs in areas of the feed yard including pen bedding ground, feed allies, bunks, and gates.
  • Repairs water lines, cleans, and fixes tanks.
  • Puts out hay and cleans up any loose hay on the ground.
  • Sets wasp and fly bait when needed.
  • Mows weeds and maintains grass areas.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance on equipment operated for the day.
  • Performs meter readings and precipitation readings.
  • Completes regular washing and cleaning of equipment inside and out.
  • Maintains regular housekeeping of shop, pump houses, and storage areas.
  • Teamwork and efficiency are expected as well as assisting in various departments of the feed yard when necessary. 
  • Follows all Dinklage safety policies, procedures, and keeps up to date with safety regulations and requirements.
  • Professionalism is expected including courtesy and respect to team members, customers, and vendors.


Experience operating heavy equipment.


Six months of related experience and/or training.


Life Sciences (Animal Sciences) – Knowledge of cattle, animal breeding, and the care of horses.


Operations and Control – Controlling operations of equipment or systems.

Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. 

Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.

Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to issues.

Monitoring – Monitoring performance of yourself to take corrective action.

Coordination – Adjusting actions in relation to others’ actions.

Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively.

Equipment Maintenance – Performing routing maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed. 


Control Precision – Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a vehicle to exact position. 

Multilimb Coordination – The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting and standing. 

Vision – The ability to see details at close and far ranges.


Operating Vehicles – Running, maneuvering, navigating, and driving a feed truck. 

Caring for Animals – Understanding livestock to the extent that you can care for the well-being of the animals in the Feed Yard. 

Handling and Moving Objects – Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.

Inspecting Equipment – Inspecting equipment to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. 

Communicating with Supervisors and Co-Workers – Providing information to supervisors and co-workers.

Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings – Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment to detect or assess problems.
